Making Cities Smarter: Innovation in Transportation Can Drive Solutions Climate Change

Transformative innovation takes ambitious support from both the government and the private sector.  That’s why we’re partnering with the U.S. Department of Transportation to create the Smart City Challenge. With this public-private partnership, we are going to enable the most innovative, ambitious and forward-thinking city in America to show just how practical and rewarding it can be to start transitioning to lower carbon, cleaner energy sources.

The Smart City Challenge is the type of project that Paul Allen and Vulcan prefer: partnering with others to develop innovative, scalable, proof-of-concept solutions that address some of the world’s most urgent challenges. And there are few challenges more urgent than climate change – especially for those cities that are already confronting severe flooding, intense heat waves and eroding shorelines.

Together, we’re going to explore, develop and implement new solutions, and establish a proof-of-concept that can serve as a roadmap for cities across the country.

Paul Allen and Vulcan believe in the power of new ideas, and we are committed to supporting solutions for cleaner energy, more efficient transportation, stronger cities and a healthier planet.

May the best city win – and when it does, may the rest of the world quickly follow.
