THE RIGHT PLAYS: VULCAN SPORTS TEAMS FIND SUCCESS

4/25/2014

Paul G. Allen's Vulcan Sports and Entertainment has had an incredibly successful year in professional sports. The Portland Trailblazers finished their turnaround season as the fifth seed and have started strong in the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2011. The Seattle Sounders are off to a terrific start with stars like Clint Dempsey regularly making soccer headlines. And, of course, the Seattle Seahawks won Super Bowl XLVIII, taking home the first Lombardi Trophy in franchise history.

Here is a brief look back on the success of these teams as well as a glimpse into what the near future has in store.

Both of the Seahawks’ Super Bowl appearances have happened under Paul Allen’s ownership, but it wasn’t until this year (38 years since the Seahawks were established) that Seattle could boast a Super Bowl Championship win. After a franchise record-tying season of 13-3, the Seahawks clinched the NFC’s No. 1 seed and secured homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. Homefield advantage was a significant factor as the 12th Man roared in support of their Seahawks and helped CenturyLink Field take the honors as loudest stadium in the world. The Seahawks went on to defeat the New Orleans Saints in the NFC divisional round and won a thrilling victory over the rival San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. Their championship season culminated in a 43-8 rout of the AFC Champion Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl.

The Portland Trail Blazers completed the greatest single-season turnaround in franchise history this year. During the 2012-2013 season the Trail Blazers turned in a record of 33 wins and 49 losses. That improved in dramatic fashion to a 2013-2014 record of 54 wins to 28 losses and a playoff berth as the NBA No. 5 seed. The Blazers finished off their regular season with five straight wins and grabbed a two-game lead over the Houston Rockets in the first playoff round. Both of those wins came in dramatic fashion, on the road and led by strong play from start LaMarcus Aldridge

The Seattle Sounders are off to a hot start with a current third-place position in the Western Conference. Clint Dempsey, back from a two-month loan to Fulham in the Premier League, has lead the Sounders in scoring with six goals in their first four games this season. Seattleites are crazy about their MLS team and are eagerly awaiting their club’s first MLS Cup victory.
