WORLD CUP OFFERS GLOBAL STAGE FOR TWO SOUNDERS

6/25/2014

Clint DempseyAll eyes are on Brazil as the World Cup is in full swing. Seattle and Vulcan are proud that two of our own -- Sounders Clint Dempsey and Deandre Yedlin – are representing the Emerald City as part of the U.S. men’s national team.

Clint Dempsey serves as the team’s captain and has two of the four goals scored by the United States in the tournament. Notably, he scored the fastest goal in USMNT history (34 seconds!) against Ghana in the opening match.

At 20 years old, Yedlin is among the youngest players to make the team’s 23-man roster. The Seattle native’s rapid rise to stardom has been marked by many firsts. He was Sounders FC’s first homegrown player; the first rookie to earn a spot on the MLS Team of the Week in a pro debut. Now he’s the first Seattle native named to the World Cup team.

The Sounders have been impressive this season, they lead the MLS standings with a record of 10-3-2, and both the ownership group and the team’s devoted fans are considered a model group for the rest of American soccer. Paul G. Allen's Vulcan Sports and Entertainment is part of that Sounders ownership group.

We are excited to see Seattle teams and players performing so well on the national and international stages. The United States is poised to emerge from the group stage round of the World Cup with a win or tie against tournament favorite Germany Thursday.
