Vulcan Capital Scales Mt. St. Helens for Northwest Harvest

11/15/2013

In summer 2013, a 12-person team from Vulcan’s Investment Management and Finance departments resolved to climb to the top of Mt. St. Helens. They hoped their attempt would inspire other Vulcan employees to donate to Vulcan’s employee giving program Food Fighters, which sends cash and volunteers to the food banks supported by the nonprofit Northwest Harvest. The team planned to trek 10 miles over the course of a day, ascending 5,665 feet from the base of the mountain to its highest elevation at 8,365 ft. Numerous Vulcan employees made pledges to donate to Northwest Harvest for every foot they climbed.

After an early arrival at the base, the team climbed all morning and caught sight of the top at 11:05 a.m. They took a breather, and then the 12-person team rallied for an assault on the summit, scaling over 2,000 feet on a steep snowfield to arrive at the rim of the crater.

"The climb was a true team effort, and everyone on the expedition had to support each other to make it a success. This challenge showed what collaboration, teamwork, and sheer determination means at Vulcan” said Paul Ghaffari, Vulcan’s Chief Investment Officer. “It was also in service of a great cause- feeding the hungry folks in our community.”

After spending some time along the rim of Mt. St. Helens, the team enjoyed a series of glissades down several snowfields before arriving back at the trailhead at 3 p.m. All told, it was a 10.8-mile round trek, but the efforts of team went much further: Together with donations from Vulcan employees, a matching pledge from the climbing team, and a further match from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, a grand total of $61,280 was raised to benefit Northwest Harvest.

Climbing to the top of a mountain is a challenge that many are happy to attempt, but going hungry is a challenge no one should face. Please consider giving to Vulcan’s Food Fighters partner, NW Harvest.
