SLU Turns 10: A Look Back at a Decade of Progress

11/15/2013

When 2012 rolled around, it marked a decade since Vulcan Real Estate began developing in South Lake Union – and what a difference a decade makes. Vulcan Real Estate’s Development Director Sharon Coleman describes the importance of South Lake Union’s past, and what the next 10 years in the neighborhood might look like.

How did so much get accomplished in just 10 years?
Tremendous collaboration! There is no question about it: South Lake Union’s success is a result of working together. It wouldn’t be the neighborhood it is today without residents, businesses, regional leaders, and the city pulling together. We are so thankful to our partners and supporters who shared in our vision, and continue to do so.

SLU10.com has a lot about the area’s history – why is that such an important piece?
Many people felt like the South Lake Union neighborhood just “happened,” all of a sudden. Thousands of workers and residents moved in along with the new construction, and this “new” South Lake Union is all that they know. They didn’t know it before, and they didn’t witness the changes. We think it is important for people to understand the soul of this place – what businesses used to operate in those old buildings, and who was connected to this area. Understanding South Lake Union’s past helps us to understand where we are going.

What does the next 10 in South Lake Union look like, anyway?
It’s constantly evolving, and the community plays a huge role in determining what the neighborhood needs next. We do know that the city has designated the neighborhood an “urban center,” so it will definitely be growing. Our goal is make sure that growth is smart. On our website www.SLU10.com, we have a feature called our “vision board” – it is an online scrapbook where we can post pictures of interesting buildings and neighborhood features from around the world. This board, which we are constantly adding to, gives our team inspiration as we look to take on new projects. I encourage you to take a look, and share your feedback with us.

What’s your favorite feature on SLU10.com?
I love the “Then and Now” slideshow. We dug up dozens of old photos of various blocks and then placed them next to pictures of that same block today. For those of us who work at Vulcan, we know the transformation in South Lake Union has been incredible. Seeing the images next to each other reminds us just how incredible the change has been.
