Allen Institute

Paul Allen is in the business of thinking big. One of the clearest examples of his unique approach is his investment in big science – those uncharted areas of knowledge that still have so many fundamental questions unanswered surrounding them.

The Allen Institute is dedicated to answering some of the biggest questions in bioscience and accelerating research worldwide. The Institute is a recognized leader in large-scale research with a commitment to an open science model within its research institutes.

Allen Institute for Brain Science

Launched in 2003, the Allen Institute for Brain Science was established to answer some of the most pressing questions in neuroscience, grounded in an understanding of the brain and inspired by our quest to uncover the essence of what makes us human. Since its creation, the Allen Institute for Brain Science has created groundbreaking public resources that are now staple research tools for thousands of scientists worldwide.

Allen Institute for Cell Science

The Allen Institute for Cell Science was launched in 2014 with the goal of creating dynamic and multi-scale visual models of human cells: the fundamental units of health and disease. Researchers at the Allen Institute for Cell Science use a highly team-driven and interdisciplinary approach to understand how information encoded in our genes becomes three-dimensional living cells, and what goes wrong in disease. The Institute creates and shares biological and digital tools already used in labs around the globe to advance our understanding of human cells.

The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group

In 2016, the Allen Institute expanded its reach toward the broader landscape of bioscience with the launch of The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group, which identifies pioneers with new ideas to expand the boundaries of knowledge and make the world better. Through continuous dialogue with scientists and visionaries around the world, the Frontiers Group uncovers novel ideas in bioscience with the potential to transform fields, and supports them through Allen Distinguished Investigator grants and Allen Discovery Center awards.
